 | LAN | Local Area Network. Network of computers that are limited in
geographical scope. Most LANs are contained within one business or
building.
| | Log on/Log in | Providing a username and password to gain access to
information. Account name can sometimes be referred to as your
'login'
| | Megabyte (MB) | A unit of measure equal to 1,048,576 bytes. Also referred to as a "meg"
| | Memory | Active storage for information, consisting of microchips
usually refered to as RAM chips, (Random Access Memory). This is distinct
from the disc drives which typically can store larger amounts of information.
When data is accessed from a hard drive, it typically is transferred to the
RAM chips in order to provide in and out repeatable access to this data,
without the user having to wait for it to be accessed from the hard disc each
time it is required. Ram is typically used to hold applications while they are
in use.
